West Virginia – Reader

Reader is a small community located in the northwestern part of West Virginia.  (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reader,_West_Virginia)

I visited a beautiful hilly farm on the outskirts of town.

The owner of the farm told me that the Reader region is having problems due to fracking.  The groundwater is polluted.  They need to build a water line to extend ten miles or so to New Martinsville, so they can get some clean water.  The owner of the farm explained that West Virginia’s land mineral rights are separate from land ownership.  In other words, anyone can buy the mineral rights to any part of another person’s property  (which is what the fracking companies did).  Sadly, there isn’t much that land owners can do about fracking on or near their property.

It’s a pity!  The area is wonderful!
