Oregon – Portland (Oaks Park)

On Wednesday, I drove to the Sellwood area of Portland, Oregon.  Near the Sellwood Bridge is an amusement park, called Oaks Park.  (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oaks_Amusement_Park & http://www.oakspark.com/)

The amusement park is more than 100 years old and one of the oldest operating amusement parks in the nation.

When I arrived, the amusement park was emptying (from an end of school year party for middle school kids).  So I walked around taking pictures, as the amusement park was closing down for the day.

I entered through a nice park/picnic area, which overlooks the Willamette River.

Wyoming – Green River

A little over a week ago, I drove through Wyoming on my way to Oregon.  Just off the interstate (I-80), I saw some beautiful scenery – in the small town of Green River, Wyoming.  (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Green_River,_Wyoming)

Nebraska – Ashland (Eugene T. Mahoney State Park)

Last night, just before sunset, my new friends and I went to the Eugene T. Mahoney State Park  (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eugene_T._Mahoney_State_Park).

We  headed up a very tall observation tower (Walter Scott Jr. Observation Tower) to watch the sunset.

The tower sat on a bluff that overlooked the Lower Platte River.  Since Nebraska is pretty flat, one can see far from the top of the tower.

I started running up and got to teh third floor.  Suddenly, I realized that the structure had hollow circles on the floor and it rocked (from the others on the tower and from the wind).

My fear of heights kicked in.

MahoneyStatePkNebraska2015 (60)

I do not mean a casual fear, but a death grip on the guardrail-type fear.  I was able to move a little, but not much….

My friends came back down to check on me.  A sweet teenager (from our group) took my hand and (by also grabbing the guardrail) I walked to the top.  I was still frightened up there, so he stayed with me and held my hand while I walked around and took pictures.   (The young man seemed like an angel to me.  I knew I would be safe with him.  FYI – He is a 17 year old exchange student from Japan.)

Here are some of the pictures…

Texas – at Louisiana Border – Blue Elbow Swamp

I drove over the Texas border from Louisiana on Interstate 10 and stopped at the Welcome Center.

Texas2014 (2)

Behind the Welcome Center was the Blue Elbow Swamp, part of the Tony Houseman State Park and Wildlife Management Area. (http://www.tpwmagazine.com/archive/2003/sept/ed_4/)

A friend recommended that I visit the swamp.  He also told me to watch for alligators.  (No, I didn’t see any.)

Texas – Abilene

I drove to Abilene, Texas, as I made my way across the country.  (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abilene,_Texas)

(I looked at my pictures from Abilene and didn’t see any spectacular shots.  These will give you an idea of what this small city looks like.)

DSCN8748The highlight of the trip was a cool old theater, called The Paramount.  I took a picture from the top floor of the lobby area.
