New Mexico – SE of Albuquerque (Routes 337, 55, & US 60) – Punta de Agua, Abo Ruins, etc.

I went looking for old New Mexico – the traditional building style and landscape.

I headed east from Albuquerque on US Highway 40 and turned south at state Route 337.   I joined state Route 55 south and then drove southwest on US Route 60.

This excursion gave me more than I had asked for.

Here are some of the highlights –

I love the way the Catholic cemeteries were decorated.

At this part of the trip, I visited the Quarai Ruins (which has a separate blog page – see https://eileen14800.wordpress.com/2014/12/18/new-mexico-salinas-pueblo-missions-national-monumentquarai/).  The ruins were spectacular!

In Punta de Agua, I found the San Vicente de Paul Catholic Church.  (http://publishing.cdlib.org/ucpressebooks/view?docId=ft72900812&chunk.id=d0e1869&toc.id=d0e199&brand=ucpress)

I also stopped at Abo Ruins, Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument  (http://www.nps.gov/sapu/historyculture/abo.htm)

New Mexico – Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument/Quarai

An hour and a half southeast of Albuquerque is the Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument/Quarai  (http://www.nps.gov/sapu/historyculture/quarai.htm and http://www.nps.gov/nr/travel/american_latino_heritage/Quarai.html)

I had seen a local tour book that mentioned the Village of Quarai, but I really had no idea what to expect.  What I found were memorable, gorgeous ruins, dating back to several centuries ago.

Since it was such a cold,  overcast day, there was hardly anyone around.  I feel blessed to be able to get there pictures without people in the shots…

New Mexico – Albuquerque

I traveled to Albuquerque on my way across country.  (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albuquerque,_New_Mexico)

I really enjoy this city.  Lots of nice people.  Easy going environment.

I have been told that it rarely rains in Albuquerque.  However, it did the day I went out to take pictures.  (Fortunately, the rain stopped long enough for me to take some pictures.)

I visited the Old Town area.

There is a historic church in the Old Town area, called San Felipe De Neri.  It was built in 1793.  (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Felipe_de_Neri_Church)

I also headed over to the Rio Grande Valley State Park – to see the Rio Grande River.  The park and the river are located in the middle of the city.  (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rio_Grande_Valley_State_Park)

I stopped by the man-made duck pond in the park.

The state park was wonderful!  Filled with natural beauty.

The rainy day added a lovely haze to the pictures …

New Mexico – Between Albuquerque & Santa Fe (Madrid, Cibola National Forest/Sandia Crest, Cedar Crest, etc.)

I took the scenic route between Albuquerque and Santa Fe.  Drove west of Albuquerque to Cedar Crest and then headed north on state Route 14 all the way to Santa Fe.

The trip was gorgeous.

Here are some of the highlights.  (Below is compilation of two different trips on Route 14.)

It was mid-December, so there was snow on the ground in Cedar Crest (which is at a higher elevation than Albuquerque).  (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cedar_Crest,_New_Mexico)

I got off the beaten path to visit a friend, who lived in the Cedar Crest area.

A few miles north of my friend’s home (along Route 14) is the road for the Cibola National Forest/Sandia Crest.  I had heard that the views were magnificent from the top of the long drive.  So I went up…  (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sandia_Mountains)

AlbuquerqueMtnNM2014 (67)Along route 14, I traveled through a cute small town, called Madrid.  (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Madrid,_New_Mexico)

It’s a sweet, little artist’s community.  It was colorful and bright.

The place was decorated for Christmas…

New Mexico – Santa Fe

I made a quick drive through Santa Fe.   I had heard so much about Santa Fe that I had to visit.  (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Santa_Fe,_New_Mexico)

Found old town.  Traffic and parking troublesome, so I took some pictures from the car….
