Just west of Portland, Oregon is an area called the Columbia River Gorge. The Columbia River runs across most of the northern part of the state (including through Portland). (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Columbia_River_Gorge)
The Gorge is magnificent, with an old scenic drive that takes the traveler past magnificent waterfalls and nature.
I visited this area in 1997 on vacation… and fell in love with Oregon here. A month later, I moved to the Portland Metropolitan area.
This trip, I drove east of Hood River for about 10 miles and looked out at the Gorge. It was a cloudy, overcast, November day (as I understand many are in that area).
